about

Originally, I wasn't really satisfied with the lyrics to this song, because it was influenced more by a TV show I watched the night before writing this song than anything that had occurred in my own life. Furthermore, it really didn't fit the "White Collar Punk" concept at all. But inevitably, anything that I write in a song ends up reflecting a situation in my own life, and it has come to pass, so I like it pretty well now.

The song depicts the protagonist's struggle to live against the unreasonable expectations of controlling women in his life. Perhaps that woman is his mother, perhaps a high-school guidance councellor, perhaps a social worker, or maybe a girlfriend. His message to them: "Get a life!"

With the music, I was working hard to achieve a more polished, layered sound for the newer songs. It was recorded within weeks of Running Down, so it has a very similar sound. On the other hand, the lyrics for that song were written nearly a year before So Wrong had anything more than a chorus and some scat words.

lyrics

You’re reading my life and my time,
wondering what to do.
You won’t be my wife, won’t be mine;
what’s it mean to you?
But you just don’t wake my soul,
So you cannot take control.

Where did we go so wrong?
When did we go so wrong?
Keep your nose where it belongs!
My heart’s long gone.

You sit in that office and you talk about my past.
You come here so often
like my clock is running fast.
I won’t happen overnight,
And some things don’t go so right.

Where did I go so wrong?
Why did I go so wrong?
Why is it me you’re counting on?
I take so long…

Think I know the reason
you depend on my success:
Vicariously live through me;
you’re life’s such a mess
Because time will take its toll
And I’ll never make your goal.

Where did you go so wrong?
When did you go so wrong?
It’s not me who "must be strong",
It’s you who’s wrong!
